Melbourne Water dangerous for 88 suburbs due to power outages

Yarra Valley Water (YVW) has advised of a potential water quality issue that impacts 88 suburbs. Power outages overnight have caused undisinfected water from the Silvan Dam to enter the water supply system. Whilst power has now been restored, and the initial issue addressed, this has resulted in potentially unsafe water entering the reticulation system.
The water is unlikely to taste or smell differently. The risk to the public is that consumers may experience gastro like symptoms. Consumers are advised to bring tap water to boil for drinking, food preparation, bathing infants and preparing baby formula.
As a precaution, YVW has advised their customers to boil their water before using for drinking, brushing your teeth, food preparation, preparing baby formula, making ice or bathing infants. Should the undisinfected water be consumed, minor gastroenteritis-like symptoms may be experienced.
YVW is working closely with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Melbourne Water, who own and manage Silvan Dam, to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
It is expected that the water supply will be back to normal later today (Friday 28 August). There will be updates throughout the day and on the YVW webpage.
